The smell of gas within your property can be alarming and it’s crucial to act quickly. Here’s what you should do if you smell gas to help keep you and the people around you safe.

I can smell gas inside my home

1. If you can already smell gas and/or think there could be a leak, you should immediately phone the National Gas Emergency Service number on 0800 111 999* at any time of the day or night.

2. Get fresh air. Open doors and windows to ventilate the property.

3. Turn off the gas at the mains tap. It’s usually located near the gas meter with a handle that can be turned 90 degrees. If the gas leak is in a basement, DO NOT ENTER and instead evacuate the building.

4. You must NOT:

• Turn on any light switches

• Light any sort of flame in the property

• Use any appliances that can cause a spark

5.  If exposure to a gas leak has left you feeling unwell – headaches, nausea, dizziness – you are advised to visit your GP as a precaution.

6. Don’t turn the gas supply on again until it’s been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
