Solar Panels

We all want to do our bit for the environment and work towards reducing our carbon footprint. So, it’s no surprise that the popularity of solar panels has skyrocketed in recent years.

How do solar panels work?

Also know as Photovoltaic (PV) panels, solar panels work by converting photons (Particles of energy contained in sunlight) in to electricity.

When the sunlight hitshits the solar panel the smaller photovoltaic cells which are snawhiched between conductive layers of silicone are energised. This happenes because electrons in the cells are knocked loose by the photons, which then creates an electric field.

This generated current is then passed through an inverter, converted into an AC current and fed in to your homes mains electricity supply.

Ideally, homes with a south facing roof are the best candidates for solar panels. If your roof sees a lot of shade during the day, then solar panels probably wont work for you.

  • Can your roof take the weight?

Before you go whacking great big solar panels on your roof, you will want to be sure your home is structurally sound.

  • Do you live in a flat?

If you live in a top floor flat and have free hold, you can still install solar panels on your roof. On the other hand, if you live in a basement or mid-floor flat, solar panels wont be an option for you.

  • Do you own your own home?

If you rent your property you wont be able to install solar panels unless you get your landlord to agree to purchasing them. Equally, if you own a property but it is leasehold, you will need to ask permission from the free holder before you go ahead.
