How to Turn On Vaillant Boiler For Heating

Your Vaillant boiler is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home — but if you’ve never set one up or returned from a holiday to a cold house, knowing exactly what to do can save a lot of frustration. Here at Plus Heat, here’s everything you need to get your Vaillant boiler up and running.

Knowing Your Vaillant Boiler Before You Turn It ON

Vaillant produce a wide range of boilers — including the popular ecoTEC range — but the startup process is consistent across most models. All Vaillant boilers work by heating water and circulating it through your radiators or underfloor heating system. Controls are typically found on the front panel and usually include a power button, temperature dial or digital display, and mode selector.

If you’re unsure which model you have, check the label on the front casing or inside the front cover panel.

How to Turn On Your Vaillant Boiler: Step by Step

Step 1: Check Your Thermostat Is Set Correctly

Before touching the boiler itself, check your room thermostat or smart thermostat controller. If the thermostat is set below the current room temperature, the boiler won’t fire up — it has no reason to. Set it a few degrees above the current room temperature to trigger the heating demand.

If you have a Vaillant VRT or sensoCOMFORT controller, make sure the heating schedule is active and the mode is set to heating rather than hot water only.

Step 2: Check the Boiler Pressure

Before switching the boiler on, glance at the pressure gauge on the front of the unit. It should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it reads below 1 bar, you’ll need to top it up using the filling loop before the boiler will operate correctly. If it reads above 2.5 bar, call an engineer before proceeding.

Step 3: Switch the Boiler On

Locate the power button or on/off switch on the front panel and switch the boiler on. Most Vaillant boilers will display a status screen showing the current flow temperature and operating mode.

If your boiler runs on gas, you may hear a brief clicking sound as the ignition fires — this is completely normal. Within a minute or two the boiler should be running and the display will confirm it’s operating in heating mode.

Step 4: Set Your Desired Temperature

Using the temperature control dial or digital interface, set your preferred flow temperature. For most UK homes, a flow temperature of 60–70°C works well for radiator systems. If you have underfloor heating, a lower flow temperature of around 35–45°C is more appropriate and more efficient.

On newer Vaillant ecoTEC models, you can also adjust the central heating output and hot water temperature independently via the display menu.

Step 5: Check Your Radiators Are Heating Up

Once the boiler is running, walk around the property and check that radiators are warming up evenly. If a radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top, it has trapped air and needs bleeding.

To bleed a radiator:

  • Turn the heating off and let the system cool slightly

  • Insert a radiator bleed key into the bleed valve (usually at the top corner of the radiator)

  • Turn anticlockwise slowly until you hear air hissing out

  • Once water begins to flow steadily, close the valve firmly

  • Recheck your boiler pressure after bleeding, as it may have dropped

Step 6: Run the System and Monitor Performance

Let the heating run for 20–30 minutes and check that all radiators are reaching an even temperature throughout. Check the boiler display for any fault codes or warning lights. A steady green light or normal display reading means everything is working as it should.

If any radiators remain cold after bleeding, or the boiler displays a fault code, consult your Vaillant user manual or call a Gas Safe engineer.

Common Reasons a Vaillant Boiler Won’t Turn On

  • Low pressure — below 1 bar will prevent the boiler from firing; repressurise using the filling loop

  • Thermostat set too low — the boiler won’t activate if the room is already at or above the set temperature

  • Fault code displayed — check the code against your manual; common codes include F22 (low pressure) and F75 (pressure sensor fault)

  • No power to the boiler — check the fuse spur switch near the boiler is in the on position

  • Frozen condensate pipe — in cold weather, a blocked condensate pipe will cause the boiler to lock out; thaw the pipe with warm water and reset

How to Reset a Vaillant Boiler

If your Vaillant boiler has locked out and is displaying a fault code, press and hold the reset button (usually marked with a flame or reset symbol) for around three seconds. The boiler will attempt to restart. If it locks out again immediately, don’t keep resetting — the underlying fault needs diagnosing by an engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Vaillant boiler not responding when I turn the heating on?

Start by checking pressure, thermostat settings, and whether a fault code is displayed. The most common causes are low system pressure (F22) and thermostat scheduling issues. If none of these apply and the boiler still won’t respond, call a Gas Safe engineer.

How do I know if my Vaillant boiler is working efficiently?

A well-functioning Vaillant boiler should reach the set flow temperature quickly, maintain consistent pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar, and heat all radiators evenly. Rising energy bills, slow heat-up times, or frequent pressure drops are signs that a service is overdue.

How often should a Vaillant boiler be serviced?

Once a year — Vaillant themselves recommend annual servicing to maintain warranty validity and keep the boiler running at peak efficiency. A Plus Heat cover plan includes your annual service as standard, carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Need help with your Vaillant boiler? Whether it won’t start or needs its annual service, Plus Heat’s Gas Safe engineers are on hand across the UK. Our cover plans include a full annual service so your boiler is ready before the cold weather hits.
